Definition of Marketing

If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying, "Circus is coming to Fairgrounds Sunday," that's Advertising.

If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk him through town, that's a Promotion.

If the elephant walks through the Mayor's flower bed, that's Publicity.

If you can get the Mayor to laugh about it, that's Public Relations.

And, if you planned the whole thing, that's Marketing!

 TRUMPET BLOWING...

Do you remember the feature on the Broadband Britain

Challenge in the June edition of the Newsletter?  Well, I just thought I'd let you know that I have been short-listed as a regional semi-finalist!

The Southeast area event is actually taking place on 14th August, which is while I am on holiday, so as I can't be there, I doubt I will get any further; but it is a proud moment I wanted to share with you all!!

ACQUIRE A QUOTE!

Ever found yourself in the unenvied position of having to write a speech, report or (shock-horror!) a newsletter?

You get stuck, you start to panic; you need to find something to succinctly wrap things up, but have no idea where to start.  And then you have a glimmer of hope ... a quotation, something witty or moving, said by someone famous would be perfect.  But you have no idea where to even begin!

Well, I stumbled across this wonderful website, when I was in just this situation having to write a speech.

Called TheQuotationsPage.com, you can type in anything in their search area to find a related quote.  For example, typing in the word "business" came up with 10 pages of sayings, however the one to the right (under my sign-off) is one I liked to sum up Virtual Assistance ...

Welcome...

to the brand, spanking new version of the Virtual Assistance Newsletter!

If you've visited the website recently, you will have noticed a change as the whole site has been re-vamped and now offers even more information about Virtual Assistance and how it can work for you.

There is now an F.A.Q page and a How it works section as well as more detailed information about each of the services I offer that is available from any page in the site.  If you haven't already, check it out, and please do send your feedback on what you think or if you encounter any problems.

One more quick notice:  I am taking a well-deserved and utterly real (not virtual!) holiday in August, so the office will be closed for the whole of w/c 11th August.  All outstanding projects will be completed beforehand unless otherwise specified and all active clients will be informed of emergency contact details individually.  If anyone else feels they may require urgent assistance during that week, please get in touch for either my emergency contact details or so that I can put you in touch with another V.A who would be able to help.

Now that's out of the way, grab a cuppa and enjoy the August Newsletter!

TEMPLATES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Most people have access to Microsoft Office, but do not make use of all the extra's that Office has to offer.  For example did you know that there is an MS Office Template Gallery with a range of templates for business use?  You don't have to sit in front of your computer for hours coming up with the right layout, wording, design or formulae for those important documents such as invoices, proposals, reports, newsletters and purchase orders.  A lot of them are 'Americanised', but they are easily editable and can save you valuable time.

Take a look at the MS Office Template Gallery

Another handy area of the Microsoft Office website is the Design Gallery Live, where you can find pictures, clip art, sounds and web components, although before you use in newsletters, brochures and web design, take a look through their terms of use (which is available on the site).

BUSINESS LINK

There are so many rules and regulations that come with running a business, that you may worry that you are not on top of them all.  But getting help in Business needn't be a difficult and costly exercise if you know where to look!

Most people have heard of Business Link, however do not realise the wealth of information they can provide a new or existing business with.  If you want a place to start regarding finance, legislation, marketing, employing people, regulations, tax or to find out if you might be eligible for any funding, grants or special consideration, then contact your local Business Link (take a look at your local phone or business directory or use an internet search engine) or visit the national Business Link website below.

A BIT OF FUN!

You know you're living in 2003 when.....

  1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

  2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

  3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

  4. You e-mail your mate who works at the desk next to you.

  5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends is that they do not have e-mail addresses

  6. When you go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business manner.

  7. When you make phone calls from home, you accidentally dial "9" get an outside line.

  8. You've sat at the same desk for four years and worked for three different companies.

  9. You learn about your redundancy on the 11 o'clock news.

  10. Your boss doesn't have the ability to do your job.

  11. Contractors out number permanent staff and are more likely to get long-service awards.

  12. And the real clinchers are...

  13. You read this entire list, and kept nodding and smiling.

  14. As you read this list, you think about forwarding it to your “friends".

  15. Most of your friends don’t talk to you any more, except to send you jokes from the net.

Well thank you once again for reading the newsletter - I do hope you found something of interest in here!

As always, your comments, suggestions and ideas are always welcome, so please contact me.

Just a quick reminder that I do not accept advertising in this newsletter - I think we all have enough bombardment from people trying to sell us things - however if you have or know of a product or service that could be of particular benefit to other newsletter readers, then please email me for the possibility of doing a 'feature'.

Until next time!!
